Journal Prompts for Mental + Physical Health

If I asked you to multiply 896 by 374 would you be able to tell me the answer right at the top of your head? It would most likely be easier to solve if you had a pen and paper to help you write it out. Likewise, it is easier to find solutions and understandings by writing out our problems and feelings on paper. Journaling induces feelings of gratitude, self awareness, creativity and understanding. It can help one to express their feelings and desires more clearly, feel more present and improve memory. I wouldn't mind enjoying these benefits, would you?

So I encourage you to find a cozy and quiet place, take out your pen, paper and perhaps a cup of tea or coffee and begin writing. You can choose one of the topics below or simply write whatever it is that is on your mind. You do not need to commit to a whole hour of writing, even ten minutes is sufficient. I hope you find clarity once you've finished.

  • Why do I want to invest in my physical health?

  • Why do I want to take care of my mental health?

  • How is taking care of my body and mind loving to myself and others?

  • What is my greatest excuse for not eating what I know is best for my body? What is my greatest excuse for not moving my body regularly?

  • Which foods make me feel energized and satiated? Which foods make me feel lethargic and unsatisfied?

  • How in tune am I with my body?

  • Do I regularly listen to what my body needs and honor it? If I don't, how can I begin?

  • How do I manage stress?

  • How can I make more time to manage my stress for both my body and mind?

  • What does rest and recovery look like for me?

  • Do I set realistic standards for myself? If so, what are some unrealistic expectations I set for myself? How can I set more realistic expectations?

  • How does my body feel today? Relaxed or tense? Pain in any areas? Where do I feel these sensations?

  • How can I speak to myself with more love and understanding?

  • How can I be my own cheerleader?

  • How often do I compare myself with others? What do I compare? How can I begin learning from others instead of comparing?

  • What are ten things that makes me unique internally and externally?

  • What are five reasons why my ten year old self would be proud of me today?

  • Which emotions do I not allow myself to feel or show to others?

  • Sadness is our response to the loss of something we love. It is also linked to the lack of options. What do I need to do or learn to create more options for myself?

  • Guilt reveals remorse for what we have done wrong or the belief that we are responsible for the feelings of others. Do I feel unecessary guilt for prioritizing my own needs?

  • Jealousy conveys what we are not allowing ourselves to enjoy or obtain. Is there something I am not allowing myself to do or learn to feel more fulfilled?

  • Regret reveals the changes we need to make now to feel content. What changes do I need to make both mentally and physically before the list of regrets lengthens?

  • Am I allowing myself to feel and do the things that make me happy? If not, what is stopping me?

  • What is one thing I want to change about my life? What is one thing I would never want to change about my life?

  • Write a love letter to my future self.

  • What are my three biggest wins this past year? What did I have to do to achieve them?

  • Where do I want to see myself in a year from now? What will it take for me to get there?
